If you have decided to move to another country, there are many things that you need to consider, one of these decisions is storage solutions. Before you can decide upon this there are a number of other things you need to know, such as what will you be doing with your UK home? What will you be doing with your belongings that you aren’t taking with you? Will you be requiring London storage and if so, how much?

Why would you need storage?

It is always a sensible decision to rent out your UK home for the first year or two of you living abroad, there are a number of reasons for this, the main one being in case you change your mind and decide to move back to the UK. Knowing you can move back into your old home would be a great relief if you were to decide living abroad isn’t for you. If you do decide to rent your home out, you can do so furnished and charge a little more, but even if you do this, you will have possessions in your home that you don’t want strangers to have (they may not even want them if they are personal to you), this is where you might need a storage solution.

Even if you decide to sell your home and some of your things, there may be items that you simply cannot part with, or think that you may want in your new home abroad (but don’t want to pay to move until you’re sure). Again a storage solution is an ideal choice for you.

You may need to use storage facilities in the case of your home in your new country of residence not being ready. If you have found out your new home isn’t ready before moving date, you can use a UK storage facility to house your belongings.

How much storage do I need?

To know this you need to look at all of your things. Everything should be placed into one of the following categories:

1. Things to move to the new home abroad.
2. Things to get rid of, either by: selling, donating, recycling or throwing them in the rubbish.
3. Things for storage, i.e. things you don’t want to move with you just yet but you do not want to part with.

The things that are being moved to your new home can be boxed, labelled and either placed in the removal van or kept out of the way.

If you have things you want to sell or get rid of in some way, then you should do this as quickly as possible, you don’t want to be left with a load of your belongings come moving day and then either having to properly dispose of them or end up taking them with you.

The belongings you would like to put into storage should be packaged and boxed up. All of the boxes should be labelled so that you know where everything is, and ideally you should take inventory so you know exactly what is in all of the boxes. When you have boxed up the things you would like to store gather them together, stack them neatly and measure how much space they take up collectively. Use this as a guide when choosing the correct sized storage facility for you.

When you are deciding upon the size of the storage space you need you should always take into consideration your future requirements. How likely is it that you will have something in the future that you need to store? And is this likely to be anything particularly big (like furniture)?
